MRIs Unnecessary for Patients Treated with Steroid Injections

A recent study shows that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans could be an unnecessary step in a patients’ treatment plan prior to epidural steroid injections if surgeons adhere to certain guidelines. Head author of the study and associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Stephen P. Cohen, MD, said, “Our results suggest that MRI is unlikely to avert a procedure, diminish complications or improve outcomes.” The study separated 132 patients into two groups. Continue reading
